How to be On the first few pages of search engine

I published my articles at ehow.com and I noticed that some of my articles made it it to the top 5 pages of search engine just being hosted by ehow. I even made it #1. So in conclusion I think if you published your article to a popular website you have better chances of being listed on the first few pages of search engine.
